HERBERT THURSTON, S.J.(1856-1939)
contributed 180 articles to the Catholic Encyclopedia and
760 articles to magazines, many to The Month, where he
was on the staff for 45 years. He is best known for his
revision of Butler's Lives of the Saints. Fellow Jesuit
Philip Caraman noted that Thurston "had great influence in
checking the growth of spiritualism after World War I, and
through his exact scientific method, skeptical turn of mind,
wide learning, and manifest desire for truth, he attained a
position of eminence and authority among scholars of his day
both in England and on the Continent." In our "Classic
Apologetics" department we print part of a short study by
Thurston on spiritualism, a precursor to the New Age
movement. Note how he approaches his subject with logic,
clarity, and precision.
We are pleased to publish in this issue K.
D. Whitehead's "The Church of the Apostles." It is a
demonstration that Jesus established an authoritative,
teaching Church. Contrary to what many believe, the apostles
knew themselves to be the leaders of a divine and visible
institution. This is an article worth sharing with your
Evangelical friends.
My own contribution to this issue is the
response I wrote to an attack in a Traditionalist tabloid.
It speaks for itself, but I want to mention here that it is
not the lengthier piece I referred to in this space two
issues ago. That article is still in preparation and will
appear in a future issue.
