One of the perks of being an editor is that you get to print your own predictions for the new year. Here are mine:
1. Catholic book publishing will remain economically shaky, but no solid publisher will go belly up, and two new imprints will be established. There will be increased demand for books (and tapes and videos) on apologetics and evangelization.
2. "Apologetics" will remain a swear word in some circles, but those circles will continue to shrink. The anti-apologetics bias is coming to be seen as passe--and dumb.
3. There will be twice as many conferences on apologetics as there were last year, and total attendance will triple.
4. More than ten new apologetics ministries, each with influence beyond its immediate area, will be started by lay Catholics in the U.S.
5. A well-known anti-Catholic organization will fold. This will be taken by Fundamentalists as a sign of the nearness of the seven years of tribulation, but it will be taken by Catholics as a sign of the nearness of seven years of Catholic jubilation.
6. The American bishops will issue another statement on the need to halt the exodus to "Bible Christianity." Most people will ignore the statement.
7. But some bishops will take the statement to heart and will begin apologetics programs in their own dioceses. These programs will work quickly. Other bishops will be surprised and will get the message.
