Dear Friend of Catholic Answers,

What a couple of months it has been! From Pope Benedict XVI’s surprise announcement that he was leaving the papacy to the election of our new holy father, Pope Francis, this has been a dramatic time.

Like every new pontiff, Pope Francis already has a staggering number of things to attend to and a full slate of activities on his schedule.

One of these events is World Youth Day, which is coming up this July in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

 Why This Is Important

World Youth Day will be one of Pope Francis’s first major appearances on the world stage.

People still have a lot of questions about our new holy father, and the eyes of the world will be riveted on World Youth Day. Millions of people will be watching, eager to learn about the new pope. Some of the media, meanwhile, will be looking for things to distort and turn against him.

This will be a high-stakes event for him as he tries to energize Catholic young people and win souls for Christ.

Incidentally, I’m sure you have questions about Pope Francis. To answer them, Catholic Answers’ own Jimmy Akin has just written one of his insightful, one-of-a-kind guides about the new pope.

I’ll tell you how you can get your copy in a moment, but first I need to mention the other reason World Youth Day is so important.

It’s About the Youth

Young people today are threatened like never before by forces trying to destroy their faith and their chastity.

The devil wants to pull them away from the Church and the practice of their faith and trap them in an immoral lifestyle that will make it harder to find their way back to God. And, unfortunately, the devil has lots of helpful minions in this world.

That’s why Pope John Paul II founded World Youth Day—as a way to reclaim the souls of young people and set them on the right course for life.

It’s why World Youth Day was close to his heart, to Pope Benedict XVI’s heart, and now to Pope Francis’s heart.

It’s close to Catholic Answers’ heart, too.

 How We’ve Helped Millions

As you know, Catholic Answers has distributed its powerful booklets Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Truth and Pure Love at World Youth Days for many years.

  • Pillar of Fire is a mini-catechism that helps young people understand their faith—perhaps for the first time. It also gives them the arguments they need to defend themselves against anti-Catholic attacks.
  • Pure Love provides the guidance young people need to protect—or recover—the virtue of chastity in a world that is constantly pressuring them to give in to sexual immorality.

These two booklets have been a powerful one-two punch defending the faith and chastity of young people.

The booklets have been extraordinarily successful, and we’ve distributed millions of copies of them over the years.

But Catholic Answers is always looking for ways to take things to the next level.

 Time to Get Moving

It isn’t enough just to stay on the defense. Defending young people’s faith and chastity is important—crucial—but it isn’t enough.

Young people are the future of the world, and we have to do more to help them.

Specifically: We need to help them get out of a purely defensive mode and help them go on the offense.

Youth is a time of zeal and dynamism, of strength and enthusiasm, of idealism and fervor.

We need to help today’s Catholic youth harness those blessings and use them to further the cause of Christ.

Youth is a time when many people want to go out and make a difference—to change the world—and we need to help today’s Catholic youth do just that.

How You Can Change the World

That’s why we’ve just produced our brand new booklet, How You Can Change the World.

It delivers a rousing call to Catholic young people and gives them the tools they need to stand up to the threats they face, including:

  • Relativism
  • Atheism
  • The idea that religion has no place in the public square
  • Non-Catholic sects
  • Sexual immorality
  • Apathy and indifference

If you know any young people, you know that these threats are among the most pressing they face today.

How You Can Change the World dispatches each of these and shows young people the task that lies before them—the task of transforming the world in Christ.

It tells them the practical things they can do to make a difference, and it tells them where they can get the resources they need to do the job.

Frankly, this is an amazing little booklet that would be a valuable resource for every Christian, regardless of age. It easily stands alongside our classics, Pillar of Fire and Pure Love.

Our Simple Plan Depends on You

We want to distribute How You Can Change the World to tens of thousands of young people at World Youth Day.

We want to get it into the hands of as many as we possibly can, so that when they return home they’ll have a map for the spiritual battle that they’re called to fight.

World Youth Day should not just be a mountaintop experience that has little lasting impact on their lives. It should be something that changes the course of their lives. And our new, practical guide will help make sure World Youth Day has maximum impact.

But—as always—we can’t do this without your help.

You’ve been there for us before, in previous years when we’ve gone to World Youth Day, and I’m hoping and trusting that you’ll be there for us this year as well. [Click here to make a gift.]

Can you help us reach the young people that Pope Francis is returning to South America to see?

  • If God has blessed you, could you consider making a donation of $1,000, $500, or $250?
  • Or perhaps you could afford $125, $100, or $75?
  • Or perhaps you could donate $60, $50, or $40?

Whatever amount you can afford, you have our sincere thanks.

For your gift of one dollar or more, we will also send you a free copy of How You Can Change the World so that you can see how valuable this dynamic new resource is.

If you are able to give $40 or more, we’ll send you five copies so that you can share them with people you know and help them start changing their part of the world. [Click here to make a gift.]

 One More Thing . . .

I mentioned earlier that I’m sure you have a lot of questions about our new holy father. That’s why Catholic Answers’ senior apologist Jimmy Akin has rushed out a special report titled Inside the Mind of Pope Francis.

It’s a fascinating read, and I know you’ll learn a lot about our new pope—including some things you may find surprising!

If you’re able to help support our current World Youth Day project by making a donation of $40 or more, we’ll send you a copy of Jimmy’s special report on Pope Francis, absolutely free.

Furthermore, if you’re able to make a donation of $75 or more, we’ll send you five copies of the booklet, Jimmy’s new booklet, and the just-released hardcover book Francis: Pope of a New World by Vatican expert Andrea Tornielli. It’s the first-ever biography of the new pope in English! [Click here to make a gift.]

We’re going to be doing our part to make Pope Francis’s first World Youth Day a resounding success, with newly energized young people returning home ready to take on the world.

But we can’t do it without your help.

May I hear from you today?

Sincerely,

Karl Keating
President, Catholic Answers

P.S. Don’t forget that if you donate one dollar or more we will send you a free copy of the powerful new booklet How You Can Change the World.

If you are able to donate $40 or more we will send you five copies of the booklet plus Jimmy Akin’s eye-opening new special report, Inside the Mind of Pope Francis.

If you’re able to make a donation of $75 or more, we’ll send you five copies of the booklet, Jimmy’s new booklet, and Francis: Pope of a New World by Andrea Tornielli.
