VOTER'S GUIDE IN "USA TODAY" AGAIN
Dear Friend of Catholic Answers:
I'm in catch-up mode, so I'll keep this E-Letter short.
We're back from the Catholic Answers cruise. All went well, except at the waistline, which means this is a week of fast and abstinence for me. Oh, the rigors of apologetics!
While off the coast of Canada, we decided on venues for the next two cruises.
In November 2005 we will sail from San Diego to the Mexican Riviera, going around the tip of Baja and stopping at three ports in Mexico.
In the summer of 2006--probably in July--our cruise will depart from New York for Bermuda.
I mention these far-off events for those of you whose social calendars fill up early.
DID YOU SEE TODAY'S ISSUE OF "USA TODAY"?
On page 8A you will find the full text of our "Voter's Guide for Serious Catholics." This is good placement--the center spread of the first (news) section of the paper.
The ad is the same as the one that appeared in four regional edition of "USA Today" on August 31, with two changes:
This time the ad appears in all of the editions of the paper, meaning that 5 million people will see it. And the ad has a new banner above the headline. The banner reads: "This is the ad that Frances Kissling of Catholics for a Free Choice doesn't want you to read!" You can see the ad here:

I want to thank those thousands of people who made the publication of this ad possible. As you know, taking out a full-page ad in a national publication isn't cheap. In fact, it costs more than the average worker's annual salary. But we think taking this step is important.
First, because of the ad the text of our voter's guide will be read by millions of people who otherwise wouldn't see the booklet version of the guide.
If we add to readers of the ad the people who will be reading the booklet or who will be seeing the video version of the guide, somewhere between 10 and 15 million Americans will have seen the "Voter's Guide for Serious Catholics" by election day.
I think it fair to say that this will be more than will have read all other Catholic voter's guides put together.
Second, the ad in "USA Today" has brought much media attention to Catholic Answers.
This morning, for example, I was interviewed by a reporter from the Associated Press, and Jimmy Akin has been interviewed by the "St. Louis Post-Dispatch."
Other papers, such as "The Oregonian" and the "St. Petersburg Times," have called too, and our voter's guide has been mentioned in "The New York Times." We even got written up in the Italian newspaper "Il Foglio"!
I expect we'll hear from more papers later in the week (but probably not any others from Italy). Not surprisingly, the voter's guide has received much positive commentary in Catholic publications, both national and diocesan.
All in all, our distribution of the voter's guide, in booklet form, in video form, and in ad form, has been a big plus for our apostolate. It has given us a level of name recognition that we didn't have before, and that will make it easier in the future to disseminate the facts about Catholic teachings.
