Aside from a blackout in the third quarter and an impressive come-from-behind by the 49ers in the second half, one of the more memorable moments of this year’s Super Bowl was Beyoncé’s halftime show performance. Apparently Beyoncé’s pants were confiscated by Superdome security and she chose to simply perform without them. This got me thinking about our culture and the challenge of communicating the virtue of modesty in the 21st century.

Like the dyslexic atheist, I don’t believe in dog.

Apparently this puts me in a minority—and a perilous one at that. For among supporters of the notion, few subjects seem to arouse as much passion as the question of whether there are pets in heaven. I think I’d rather debate Android versus Apple, or argue for the merits of baby formula in a room full of La Leche Leaguers, than tell people that they won’t be spending the hereafter cuddled up with Fido.

Today is the anniversary of the birth of Adlai Stevenson II (1900-1965), governor of Illinois and twice presidential candidate on the Democratic Party ticket. His final political role was as American ambassador to the United Nations.
