I'm not a person who naturally thrives in silence. During Lent, I have a hard time keeping the radio turned off in my car for the ten-minute drive to work. It is rather amazing then how annoyed I can become with unnecessary noise before and after Mass. A few months ago, a friend of mine returned from a vacation to Europe with a souvenir for me. She had been browsing in an antique shop in Verdun, France, and found a rosary that dated to about 1902–1910. Not long after the rosary was made, the Battle of Verdun raged during World War I.
